MALATE, MANILA - Last January 20, 2017, the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (BAFS) formally turned over the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) Program to the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI). The transfer was presided by Director Vivencio R. Mamaril of BPI and Director Karen S. Bautista of BAFS. Present also during the event were technical personnel from BPI - Plant Products Safety Services Division (PPSSD), BPI - Crop Research and Production Support Division (CRPSD) and BAFS – Technical Services Division (TSD).
Ms. Mary Grace Mandigma of DA-BAFS led the discussion on the Quality Procedures of GAP Certification
The transfer of the GAP program is pursuant to Republic Act No. 10611, otherwise known as the Food Safety Act of 2013, which identified BPI as the regulatory agency for food crops. As part of the transfer, a workshop was conducted in order to familiarize the BPI GAP Program Secretariat on the quality procedures of GAP Certification (from processing of GAP applications up to provision of GAP certificates) and on the use of the database of applicants and certified farms. Ms. Mary Grace Mandigma of DA-BAFS facilitated the workshop and was supported by Mr. Jan Vincent Tecson and Ms. Mary-Joy Goce, also from DA-BAFS.
